Torcato Faria, Country Manager for Portugal at B&B Hotels, informed press agency Lusa that the new three-star, 116 room hotel is expected to open in April 2022, creating an estimated 35 direct and indirect jobs in the Minho region city.
This is the seventeenth of 34 units the chain from the Goldman Sachs universe has on its portfolio for the Portuguese market. The investment contract was signed last week at Viana do Castelo’s City Hall.
Construction works should begin this year, during «December’s first fortnight» and will include «demolishing old warehouses» installed in the terrains acquired by the group within a block located between Rua Tenente Coronel Afonso do Paço and Estrada da Papanata, next to the Eiffel Bridge.
With an implantation area of around 4.000 sqm, the building which will host the future hotel «will have a ground floor plus four more floors and a fifth-floor on the rectified area which will be leant against another building», advanced Torcato Faria.
This project is in line with the international expansion plan carried out by B&B Hotels. «We are opening two hotels per week», stated Torcato Faria, revealing that the goal is to «reach 620 or 640 by the end of the year».
Currently, B&B Hotels has four units active within the Portuguese market, but it has several investments in its portfolio, some of which are being constructed. That is the case, for example, of the new B&B Hotel Lisbon Oeiras, whose construction works started this September, or the new B&B Hotel Porto e, Gaia, in construction since last Summer and located next to El Corte Inglés in Gaia. Up until the end of the year, a new unit is also expected to open in Montijo.
