The Council of Ministers has approved the transfer of land from eight former prisons for the construction of 1,332 affordable homes, as part of the state plan to expand the public housing stock.
The plots, owned by the Ministry of the Interior, will be transferred to the Public Land Agency (Sepes), which reports to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda, the body responsible for their development. The total value of the land amounts to €78 million, according to government sources.
The locations included in the operation include the former prisons of Carabanchel (Madrid), Córdoba, Seville, Zaragoza, Ocaña (Toledo), Soria, León and Logroño. In the capital, the former Carabanchel prison will have the largest number of homes, with a planned total of 508 units.
The project is part of the government's commitment to mobilise underused public land to increase the supply of affordable housing, especially in areas under pressure. According to the Ministry of Housing, the land will be used for the construction of subsidised rental housing and will be carried out through public-private partnerships.
This measure is part of the strategy to use state-owned assets for residential purposes, a line of action that the Executive plans to continue in the coming years to respond to the demand for affordable housing.
