Travelodge continues its expansion in Spain with new hotels in Madrid and Bilbao

Travelodge, the second largest British hotel chain in the mid-market segment, is continuing its expansion in Spain with new hotels planned in Madrid and Bilbao, which form part of its roadmap until 2026. The company presented its strategic plan during a corporate meeting held at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, attended by representatives from the hotel sector, investors and specialised media, alongside Jo Boydell, CEO of Travelodge Hotels Limited; Steve Bennett, Chief Property & Development Officer; and Ángel Beleño, Managing Director of Travelodge Spain.

Bennett pointed out that "Spain is a priority for Travelodge, as its premium functional model is in line with the new demands of European customers and institutional investors". The company has grown from managing five to twelve hotels in less than two years, with more than 1,300 rooms in operation following the acquisition of several assets from the Louvre Hotels group in 2024.

The expansion plan envisages reaching 20 locations in the coming years, with new projects confirmed in Bilbao (2026) and Madrid (2027). In addition, work is expected to begin on three assets located in San Sebastián, Cádiz and Alicante, which will add more than 450 rooms to its national portfolio.

In 2024, Travelodge Spain recorded 400,000 guests, with a 30% increase in revenue and EBITDA of €5.5 million. The group plans to maintain sustained growth through an active pipeline that includes both new construction developments and conversions of existing assets, under a flexible model that encompasses individual operations and portfolio acquisitions.

The operating model combines owned and managed establishments, adapted to different types of assets and locations. Its main lines of work include the implementation of the new 85 Bar Café gastronomic concept, the improvement of digital processes and the loyalty programme, as well as the promotion of direct booking channels.

Travelodge plans to expand its presence in key urban destinations and locations with growing tourist potential. It is also considering future additions in cities such as Valencia and Malaga, with the aim of diversifying its territorial coverage and adapting to different traveller profiles.
