Bestinver, Acciona’s investment management company, is allocating €20 million to the conversion of a former Corpus Christi convent in Valladolid, which will be transformed into a student residence. The project required the demolition of the building, which has already been approved by Valladolid City Council.
The project involves the refurbishment of the convent located at number 12 Paseo Prado de la Magdalena, and its future extension through a new build on the unprotected open space of the plot, as well as the construction of a new building on an adjacent site.
The transformation of the property will take place on two plots classified as consolidated urban land, according to the City Council. They also added that the project has been designed with the heritage values of the complex in mind, and that “the development reconciles the conservation of protected heritage with the construction of new spaces intended to enhance the city’s accommodation provision”.
Construction of the student residence is expected to take approximately 25 months to complete, and it is expected to be operational in time for the 2028 academic year. The complex will have a total of 294 rooms, distributed across the various buildings that make up the project.
Of this total, 149 will be located in the convent once it has been refurbished, 21 in the historic main building, 40 in the extension to the historic building, and 84 in the new building planned for the adjacent plot.
The Corpus Christi building is included in the Architectural Catalogue of Valladolid’s General Urban Development Plan, with a level of structural protection that applies to both the convent complex and the ancillary buildings. Similarly, the convent’s open spaces and the brick walls surrounding the site are subject to environmental protection.
