Lidl logistics platform in Martorell, Barcelona

Lidl is making progress on the construction of its future logistics platform in Martorell, Barcelona, a project that is expected to play a crucial role in the expansion of the company's business in the north-east of Spain. The platform, located on a plot of more than 126,000 square metres in the Xàmenes industrial sector, represents Lidl's largest logistics investment in Spain, estimated at around 140 million euros, since its arrival in the country thirty years ago. The facility is expected to start operations in 2025.

The Martorell complex, with a surface area of approximately 66,000 square metres and 144 docks, will be one of Lidl's largest warehouses in both Spain and Europe. This warehouse will complement another existing one in Catalonia, located in Montcada i Reixac, which has a surface area of more than 46,000 square metres. This expansion responds to Lidl's need to adapt its logistics resources to the sustained growth it has experienced in Catalonia and other autonomous communities, allowing it to continue to generate local employment, open new shops and acquire more regional products.

Boosting the economy and employment in Catalonia

With the inauguration of the Martorell logistics platform, Lidl seeks to reinforce its role as one of the main drivers of the economy and employment in Catalonia. Lidl currently operates a network of more than 120 shops and employs more than 4,000 people in this autonomous community. The company has demonstrated its commitment to the Catalan agri-food industry, making annual purchases of regional products worth more than 820 million euros from more than 180 suppliers. According to a study by the consultancy firm PwC, Lidl's activity in Catalonia contributes around 1,300 million euros annually to the regional GDP (0.55% of the autonomous region's total) and supports approximately 26,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs (0.74% of the autonomous region's total).

National expansion and new logistics platforms

The future Martorell facility is part of Lidl's ambitious national expansion plan, which includes the construction of three additional logistics platforms. These projects will be distributed throughout Spain: one in Parla (Madrid), on a plot of more than 145,000 square metres; another in Constantí (Tarragona), on a plot of some 185,000 square metres, with a provisional warehouse operational in mid-2024 until the construction of the definitive one is completed; and a final one in Villadangos del Páramo (León), on a plot of some 158,000 square metres. After the recent inauguration of its warehouse in Escúzar (Granada), Lidl currently has a network of 12 logistics platforms in Spain.
