Mercer Hoteles to open a five-star hotel in Madrid

Mercer Hoteles will open a five-star luxury hotel in the Jerónimos neighbourhood in 2025. It will do so in partnership with Alting Grupo Inmobiliario, owner of the property at Calle Ruiz de Alarcón 5, in the heart of Madrid. The building, of great heritage value, will be transformed into a high-end hotel with 61 rooms and suites, with a CAPEX investment of ten million euros and completion scheduled for July 2025. The hotel is scheduled to open to the public in autumn of the same year.

The deal enhances Madrid's position as an international luxury tourism destination. Mercer Hoteles, a chain awarded the MICHELIN Key 2024 for its hotels in Barcelona and Seville, is coming to the capital with a project that follows its philosophy of luxury.

The building, built in 1905 as the headquarters of the Sociedad General Azucarera de España, was designed by Enrique María Repullés y Vargas, architect of the Royal House and author of the Palacio de la Bolsa in Madrid. It is listed with protection level one and its refurbishment will be led by Luis Galiano's studio RCCyP Arquitectura, together with the interior designer Andreu Carulla. The protected architectural elements will be preserved, combining Madrid eclecticism with neoclassical and neo-Mudejar details.

The new Mercer Hotel Madrid will offer a haute cuisine restaurant. It will also have a spa and a rooftop with a swimming pool, among others, as well as views of the Madrid Stock Exchange, Puerta de Alcalá, Retiro Park, the Prado Museum and Plaza de Cibeles.

The selection process of the hotel operator was managed by JLL Hoteles in a national and international search. Mercer Hoteles was advised by RAICH&VIA lawyers and economists. Pedro Molina, CEO and founder of Mercer, has shared that ‘this project represents a return to the origins respecting the history of the Azucarera’ and has stated that they will offer ‘a refined luxury experience, without stridency, which seeks beauty and excellence’.

For Carolina Marcos, deputy general manager of Alting, ‘this change of use, from offices to hotel, not only optimises the profitability of the asset, but also reinforces our commitment to contribute to the repositioning of Madrid as a global luxury tourist destination’.
