Last year, foreign direct investment (FDI) transactions in Portugal totalled 13.2 billion euros, an increase of 27% on the 11.1 billion euros recorded in 2023, reveals the Bank of Portugal (BdP).
Foreign FDI transactions also reflect a very positive contribution from property investment, which totalled 3,537.49 million euros last year. Even so, this result was 9% below the 3,871.72 million euros recorded by the BdP as FDI in the property sector in 2023.
However, looking at the chain evolution, the trend is positive, with FDI in real estate growing in every quarter since the beginning of 2024. The fourth quarter was the most dynamic, accounting for around 30 per cent of the total value allocated to the sector for the year, around 1,047.43 million euros. By contrast, the first quarter was the least active, with only 664.25 million invested; a figure that grew by 30 per cent in the second quarter, when 863.79 million euros were invested. Growth continued in the third quarter (11%), during which 962.02 million euros were raised in foreign capital for the sector; it was even more pronounced in the final stretch of the year, with the fourth quarter reporting a 9% increase in the volume of international capital invested in real estate.
