Grupo Sanjose has been awarded the construction contract for what will become Europe’s largest surf park, to be developed next to Atlético de Madrid’s Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.
The project, known as Gemswell Surf Madrid, is being promoted by Stoneweg InfraSports — a joint venture between Stoneweg and Teras Capital — in partnership with Atlético de Madrid. Envisioned as an artificial beach and aquatic sports hub, the surf park will form a key feature of the club’s future Ciudad del Deporte (Sports City) in the San Blas-Canillejas district of the Spanish capital.
The total investment in the project is expected to exceed €50 million, with construction works already underway following the completion of initial land clearing and soil compaction. Sanjose will now begin foundation work on the central building, which will house a surf academy, a 400 sqm surf shop, and more than 3,000 sqm of beachside dining areas and terraces.
In addition, foundation work for the surf lagoon platform is set to start in October 2025, with the aim of filling the lagoon in November and installing the wave-generation technology, developed by Spanish firm Wavegarden, by April 2026.
Once completed, the 23,000 sqm lagoon — with a maximum depth of 2.85 metres — will be the largest of its kind in Europe, capable of hosting up to 120 surfers per session. The facility will feature more than 20 types of waves reaching heights of up to two metres, as well as a 700 sqm skate park to support surf training and related activities.
Gemswell Surf Madrid is projected to attract around 500,000 visitors annually and generate over 100 direct jobs, positioning it as a major leisure and sports destination in the region.
