CBRE and AQ Compute open their first data centre in Barcelona

For the time being, the consultancy firm and the German investment and sustainable asset development company have reached an agreement for the development of a European Data Centre strategy, the first project of which will be developed in Barcelona with a capacity of 50MW.

CBRE's Investment Banking division has advised on the establishment of the cooperation between CBRE and AQ Compute.

This first project, which will be operated jointly, will also integrate the experience of On Value Technology, a company specialising in data centres with more than 30 years' experience in the sector.

According to CBRE data, 2021 was a record year for data centre investment in Europe, with a total volume of more than €1 billion, with 70% of the assets located in the UK.

Spain is increasingly gaining traction in the data centre business and is beginning to compete with the FLAP markets (Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam and Paris), hitherto the preferred locations for data centre facilities.

Specifically, while the FLAP markets are expected to grow by between 20% and 30% per year, Madrid is expected to grow by 540% and Barcelona by 500%. According to the forecasts of a recent CBRE study, the Madrid capital is expected to reach the levels of Paris (+400 MV) in the short term. Barcelona, on the other hand, is expected to reach around 85 MV in the next three years.
