Barcelona Mercedes’ former factory transformed into a housing and tertiary mixed project

Barcelona mayoress, Ada Colau, presented the project to transform Mercedes-Benz’s former factory, in Barcelona’s Sant Andreu district. 1.450 new dwellings will be built within the industrial plot of land.

Some of them will benefit from affordable housing and there will be areas destined for logistic, offices and «creative use». Thus, around 60% of the area will be destined to housing and around 40% to economic activities.

There will also be a participatory process open to the local community and the relevant authorities to define the procedures, informed the municipality.

The project

The project includes the construction of around 1.450 dwellings, 40% of which will benefit from affordable housing (580). Half of these dwellings will be for rental and around 60% free.

The mayoress, Ana Colau, has assured the project will not carry any costs for the municipality which will be fully assumed by the owners. «The municipality will make no investments, we will process the changes to Metropolitan General Urban Masterplan and the costs will be paid by the developer».
