In the third quarter of this year, direct investment from abroad in Portugal totalled 5.6 billion euros, surpassing the 4.2 billion recorded in the same period in 2023. This growth was largely driven by investment by non-residents in the capital of Portuguese entities, which totalled 3.5 billion euros.
According to data published by the Bank of Portugal (BdP), of this amount, around 1.0 billion euros corresponded to investment in the property sector.
Between July and September, FDI income paid to non-residents totalled 4.1 billion euros, 0.3 billion euros more than in the same period last year. On the other hand, Portugal's direct investment abroad (DII) transactions received from non-residents totalled 2.0 billion euros, 0.2 billion euros less than in the third quarter of 2023.
At the end of the period under review, the stock of foreign direct investment in Portugal (FDI) totalled 196.5 billion euros, and Portugal's direct investment abroad (DPI) totalled 71.5 billion euros. These amounts represented 70 per cent and 26 per cent of Portugal's GDP, respectively.
Since 2008, both stocks have increased, albeit at different rates, the statistical information note also details: FDI more than doubled between the end of 2008 and the third quarter of 2024, while FDI grew by 32 per cent. When measured as a percentage of GDP, the weight of FDI increased by 25 percentage points, but the weight of DDI fell by 4 percentage points.
